This EMPI-exclusive engine is assembled using all-new, high-quality components selected from EMPI's extensive air-cooled VW performance lineup.
Every engine is fully dressed, tested, and tuned on the EMPI dyno before delivery, helping ensure that your new engine arrives ready for installation. Simply select the appropriate exhaust system for your application, complete the required external oil cooler installation and wiring, and finish the vehicle-specific installation.
Built for Dune Buggies & Baja Bugs
The 1914cc Dune Buggy Turn-Key Engine is specifically configured for the unique cooling demands of low-speed off-road driving.
At the heart of the engine is a heavy-duty AutoLinea aluminum bubble-top engine case combined with upgraded dual-port cylinder heads. The heads feature OSVAT OE-style valves and receive a proprietary 3-angle valve job performed by EMPI in Anaheim, California.
For enhanced cooling, the engine uses an EMPI 36HP Early Style Super Shroud along with a remote-mounted electric fan and 72-plate external oil cooler. This cooling package is designed to provide increased cooling capacity for demanding off-road conditions where vehicle speeds may be too low to provide the airflow experienced during normal highway driving.

Dyno Tested & Tuned
Each EMPI Turn-Key Engine is dressed out, tested, and tuned on the EMPI dyno before leaving the facility. This process helps verify engine operation and provides a properly prepared starting point for installation into your Dune Buggy or Baja Bug.
Cooling System
Off-road vehicles frequently operate at lower speeds where engine cooling can become especially important. This engine is equipped with a cooling system specifically selected for these conditions, including:

An exhaust system is not included with this engine. This allows you to select an exhaust that best fits your specific Dune Buggy, Baja Bug, chassis, and vehicle configuration.
Installation Requirements
Although this is a complete turn-key engine, vehicle-specific installation work is still required. The external oil cooler and electric fan require mounting and wiring, and the appropriate exhaust system must be purchased separately.
Always verify engine-to-transmission compatibility, clutch requirements, vehicle clearance, fuel system requirements, electrical connections, and exhaust fitment before installation.

RETURNS
We happily accept returns or exchanges as long as the merchandise is in NEW condition (never been installed/mounted), complete with all original packaging, within 60 days of receiving.
- We are unable to accept returns on beams, buggy in a box, engines, fabric, fenders, floor pans, suspension parts, transmissions, & windshields.
- Orders over $400 are subject to a 10% restocking fee
- ALL returns must be processed through our return portal. Any return sent back outside of the return portal will be refused. If you select Redo at checkout, your return label is FREE and your package is protected from loss, damage, or theft. (Not available on final sale or freight items.)
